THE WORLD IS OUR STAGE

LONG DISTANCE AFFAIR

"Theatre is often comfortable voyeurism - Long Distance Affair rejects this traditional role. You become as much a part of the narrative as the actor, making the experience surprisingly raw and unsettling, as your past life spills into the story, sharing it with a perfect stranger." Matthew Tucker, The Huffington Post

Long Distance Affair is a one of a kind theatrical event: an online immersive for an intimate audience created and performed by theater artists around the world. Originally conceived as a multi-national collaboration where audiences in a single city gathered at one venue around private screens in personal rooms, Long Distance Affair will re-launch for audiences world-wide gathered in their own homes. After six successful iterations for audiences in Buenos Aires, Bucharest, Edinburgh, New York City and Queretaro, we are excited to re-conceive this intimate immersive that amplifies the power of live performance in a time of prohibited social gathering.

BUCHAREST, Romania (2014) : The International Theater Platform: The Future is Feminine,  ArCub
PopUP's last edition of Long Distance Affair was composed of an collective of entirely female identified artists and pulled from the LDA anthology of work created over the previous five editions. We also commissioned a new team of international collaborators: Playwright: Cami De Urioste (Bolivia), Director: Chari Arespacochaga (Canada/Philippines) and Actor: Rachel Leslie (US) to create a new piece dedicated to the Romanian audiences gathered in Bucharest.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (2013):  Bienal Arte Joven Buenos Aires
After 4 successful productions since 2011 with more than 75 artists world wide, we expanded our family and included over 30 new emerging Spanish language fluent artists under 33 for the Buenos Aires edition of Long Distance Affair. The show itself took place around the world, but the Buenos Aires audience viewed it via Skype at Ciudad Cultural Konex in private rooms specifically designed for one audience member at a time. LDA Buenos Aires assembled 18 teams of 54 Actors, Playwrights and Directors from around the world.

EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE, Scotland (2013): Summerhall
LDA performed at the prestigious festival in August 2013 at Summerhall. 50 artists from 6 continents joined the project.   Huffington Post UK wrote: "Theatre is often comfortable voyeurism - Long Distance Affair rejects this traditional role. You become as much a part of the narrative as the actor, making the experience surprisingly raw and unsettling, as your past life spills into the story, sharing it with a perfect stranger. Margineanu’s production is dangerous, thrilling and a fascinating piece of psychological theatre."

NEW YORK CITY, US (2013)
Long Distance Affair was produced at The Gershwin Hotel in February, 2013. 33 artists from 6 continents participated: Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America, and Australia. When theater meets technology possibilities become endless. In Long Distance Affair, someone across the globe is reaching out exclusively to you. What will be the result when you and a perfect stranger meet with only a computer screen between you?

QUERÉTARO, MEXICO (2012)
18 artists from 6 countries took this virtual adventure and brought it to an intimate audience of 48  in Querétaro Mexico. Each  virtual "affair" was performed for only one audience member at a time.
Long Distance Affair: Querétaro was made possible through the partnership with El Centauro Mecánico and at the invitation of the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro and the 7° Festival Cultural Universitario Tecnología-Exceso de Presente. The participating countries were: Romania, US, Germany, Spain, Australia and Mexico and our guiding question was: What level of intimacy can you aspire to when all the information you receive comes through a computer screen?

NEW YORK CITY, US (2011)
In its premiere event, Long Distance Affair was first presented in November 2011 at "Around the World in 24 hours," an Internationalists Directors Collective Annual Festival of independent global theatre makers.
